Case of the Week (week 36, 2024)
Routine examination, with no palpable mass on clinical examination.
The mammogram, as interpreted by the radiologist, was followed by an ultrasound due to dense breasts. During this scan, a 0.81 cm diameter ACR4-classified mass was detected in the upper-external quadrant of the right breast. The biopsy revealed an infiltrating canal cancer.
A second reading of the mammogram with MammoScreen located the cancerous area as a mass on the right side, which scored a 7 on the MammoScreen Score. This case shows the interest of AI in the detection of small subtle cancers that may not be detected by the radiologist for different reasons (fatigue, delay, distraction by other tasks…).
Fortunately the cancer was caught in this case by ultrasound for dense breasts, but the systematic reading with AI assistance would allow with certainty to suspect the cancer and make an oriented ultrasound.
